This gift box cake was made for the annual danish cake competition held by a danish cake craft store. It is quite small and cosy but it is always nice as I meet many of my danish cake friends for a nice “cake chat”.
I was so lucky to win 1. prize with my cake and it is now my turn to have the challenge trophy at home.
Note:
I have used pink food color for the top tier and a mix of blue and green food color for the second tier. The Petunia cutter and petal veiner and my sugarcraft gun have also been used on the cake.
You can also find a tutorial on how to make a sugar bow here.
You can see more details of the cake in my cake gallery here and other cakes decorated with sugar bows here and here.
Happy Caking
Louise

Hi, did you use the sugarcraft gum to create the seam edge on your fondant box tops? Otherwise I was wondering how you created such a perfectly uniform “snake.” ????
April 18th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Tracy: Yes I have used the sugarcraft gun to make the “seam” it is one of the tools I would not live without. It is so fantastic to use.

Thank you Louise! I have no idea how you find the time to manage this blog but I always learn so much and it is so fun to come visit. And, now, of course, there is a new toy that I want. I was thinking about the cutter/embosser from Wilton but the sugarcraft gun seems so much better and often I am disappointed when I buy Wilton products. You seem to find the best stuff. Tracy

Tracy: Sometimes I think of the same. Do yourself a favour and buy the sugarcraft gun it is the most wonderful piece of tool to work with. You will NOT regret it I promise.

Congratulations Louise, you’re really the number one!!
I will try to realize a cake that I hope will look a bit like yours… Do you have any special advice?
Thank you very much,
Paola

Paola: It it this cake?? or another??
April 28th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Hi Louise, yes I meant this cake but with a single layer: it’s hard enough!!
I’ll follow your suggestions and tutorial for the bow… anything else important I should know?
Thank you very much

Paola: They are both pretty easy to make. The “lid” of the boxes is just pieces of fondant added to the fully covered cake. I have used a sugar gun to make the strings to cover up small gaps ect.
I would love to the cake Paola…….
Enjoy!

Hi Louise!
Wonderful cake! I really love your site and I visit often. I do have a question that I hope you can help with - I am thinking about purchasing the sugarcraft gun, and I was wondering how well you are able to get long lengths of ribbons/rope/etc. In other words, do you feel that to apply a fondant rope or ribbon around a 10″ cake, I would be better off just cutting one manually or using the sugarcraft gun? I know the gun is good for short lengths of ribbon, but what is your opinion of the longer length output?
Thanks so much!!

Kara: There have been a lot of talking about the use of sugarcraft guns read here: http://www.cakejournal.com/archives/sugarcraft-gun/
Now I love it very very much and think it is a brilliant tool. Eventhough it can contain loads of fondant paste I find it good to work with as long as you knead in a few drops of water & some white fat to make it more pliable to push through.
You can un-screw and fill in more paste if you want a very long rope. Or try take a look at this tool: http://www.fmmsugarcraft.com/pages/fullprod.php?id=63 It will always cut straight and even ribbons in the lenght you roll out your paste.
